What does "nondenominational" mean?

A nondenominational church is a Christian congregation that isn't formally tied to a historic denomination such as Baptist, Lutheran, Catholic, Mormon, or Jehovah's Witness. These churches are usually independent, self-governing, and focused on following Jesus directly through the Bible. The movement grew rapidly in the United States during the 20th century as Christians sought a simpler, more personal faith outside traditional denominational structures. Today, nondenominational churches are found in almost every city and town, welcoming people from every background to worship together.

What we look for in a good nondenominational church

We believe a healthy church should:

  • Believe Jesus is God and the only Savior.
  • Affirm the Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • Read the Bible aloud and teach it faithfully.
  • Worship in spirit and truth, not by tradition alone.
  • Welcome all people and share the good news of Jesus.
  • Encourage prayer, baptism, and a life of following Christ.
